The Wiz

“The Wiz” captures a piece of African American culture that I wanted to be experienced on a grand scale during my time at the University of Michigan. This show allowed the opportunity to celebrate the Black diaspora through this hyper-realistic dreamscape. The story of “The Wiz” allows us to step away from the struggles and impoverishment that Black society has faced throughout this country’s history. This story allows us to celebrate many different facets of the Black experience that are grounded in tradition, fashion, dance, and music. This story must continue to be told because it creates a pathway into a common experience that is disconnected from race. This story was birth out of the Golden Age film “The Wizard of Oz” which has captured the hearts of American society since the early Twentieth Century. This retelling to the story allows for a type of cultural exchange that helps us all understand that we are all just human at the root. We are people fighting to find home. We as humans are perfectly imperfect beings, and this musical paints that out for all who see it. This story teaches that you are enough and there is no need to look outside of yourself for anything. You were born with everything you need.
Having the opportunity to let this African American story be told by a complete cast of color has been extremely rewarding. Being able to share the gift of this culture from our perspective could open a door to endless possibilities for artistic representation for all unheard voices across this University.
